A.R. Wilson Community Park Groundbreaking
The Aromas Community Center Foundation is hosting a Groundbreaking Ceremony at the A.R. Wilson Community Park, 300 Aromas Road, Aromas on Friday, May 4, 2007 at 5:15 pm.
In June of 1997 the Foundation purchased the 17-acres of open land along Aromas Rd for $217,000 with a $150,000 donation from Graniterock and grants from the Packard Foundation ($60,000), the Harden Foundation ($40,000) and AT&T ($10,000).
In 1999 the Union Pacific Rail Road donated an adjacent one-acre parcel creating 18-acres of land for park development. The site will include two soccer fields, two baseball fields, a concession stand, bathrooms, fencing and parking. Vehicle access will be to and from Aromas Road but the plan includes a pedestrian walkway from the adjacent residential neighborhood and the Aromas School.
Following the purchase of the land, the Foundation received an additional $40,000 grant from the Packard Foundation (1998), a $25,000 grant from the Harden Foundation (2005), $10,000 from the Eric Anderson Charitable Trust, and $94,400 from a California State Park Grant.
With total construction costs approaching one million dollars, Foundation President Janet Montgomery is hoping the outstanding community support for the Park will continue. “We will be pursuing additional grants, both private and public as well as continuing our fundraising efforts said Ms. Montgomery. Because Aromas is part of three Counties (San Benito, Monterey, and Santa Cruz), the Park will be a truly regional facility. This is a three-County effort and we’re looking for regional people and regional businesses to donate their labor and materials.”
Following Friday’s groundbreaking, the first order of business will be preliminary grading, repair and installation of infrastructure and fencing for the site.
