Graniterock Celebrates 113 Years with New Children’s Book
Early Years of Local Company's History Photos Captured in Engaging Tale
On February 14, Graniterock celebrates 113 years of business. Since it was founded in 1900, the Watsonville based Company has offered quality concrete, building and road materials, and general contracting in the San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas. A highlight of this year’s celebration is the publication of a new children’s picture book, Engine Number Ten, written by Company historian Rose Ann Woolpert. The book may be purchased and the author will be available for signing at all events. Illustrated by Jaguar Design Studio of Aptos and based on the true story of steam engines used during the last century at the A.R. Wilson Quarry in Aromas, it is illustrated with beautiful archival photos and original drawings.
Engine Number Ten is a tale of steam engines, rock mining and California history. The story line:
One hundred years ago, men and mules did the back-breaking labor of quarrying rock to build new roads and towns. Steam locomotives and shovels came to help, but wore out and were replaced. When the last quarry steam locomotive helped save a new diesel engine trapped in a rock slide, she was spared from the scrap heap. Years later, the boy who witnessed her willing spirit became the man who restored her and helped her find new and meaningful work at the Railroad Museum in Sacramento.
Engine Number Ten ($17.99, hardcover, 32pp) will be available at Graniterock and other local retail locations beginning February 14 and may also be purchased online through Amazon.com. For more information find enginenumberten.com online or call Keith Severson at Graniterock at 831-768-2063.
