Graniterock Wins National Safety Award
NSSGA Recognizes Local Company's Achievement
San Diego, CA—At the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA) Annual Conference awards ceremony, Frank Williams, Quarry Manager, accepted the NSSGA “Rocky” Safety award on behalf of Graniterock’s A.R. Wilson Quarry. The award was for having the best safety performance among U.S. quarry operations producing more than 1.5 millions tons of product annually. The A.R. Wilson Quarry Team worked an entire year with zero lost-time injuries. This award demonstrates the strong commitment to working safely practiced by the A.R. Wilson Quarry Team. NSSGA is the nation’s largest and most respected industry association of construction material suppliers representing more than 75,000 employees. Graniterock’s Santa Cruz Sand Plant, Quail Hollow Quarry, and Southside Sand & Gravel also received certificates of achievement from the NSSGA for working a year without a lost-time accident.
The Rocky Safety Award competition recognizes safe work practices, which have demonstrated accident reduction results. The association separates the entrants into six production classes based on the total tonnage produced annually. Each entrant receives a score calculated using a special formula that incorporates the tonnage produced, hours worked and number of lost-time accidents during a given calendar year. The award, a handsome statuette of a miner in a hardhat, goes to the entrant with the lowest score in each of six the production classes. Participants that have remained accident-free for one year or more are also recognized. Honor Roll certificates go to companies recording no lost-time accidents for the last five years. Certificates of Achievement go to companies recording no lost-time accidents annually.
Granite Rock Company has been a local company for more than 100 years, and presently has operations in Watsonville, Santa Cruz, Seaside, Salinas, Hollister, Aromas, Felton, San Jose, Redwood City and South San Francisco. Graniterock’s Pavex Construction Division is a significant regional heavy engineering contractor building roadways, airports and private commercial and residential projects.
Graniterock received the 1992 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the 1994 Governor’s Golden State Quality Award. The Company was also just named one of the 100 Best Places to Work in America byFortune magazine. This is the fourth year in a row the company was so honored.
