Graniterock Wins Quality In Construction Award—Local Firm Recognized for SFO Runway Project
Graniterocks Pavex Construction Division Wins National Asphalt Pavement Associations (NAPA)Award for Excellence in Paving
The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) announced that Graniterock’s Pavex Construction Division of Redwood City, California has won The Quality in Construction Award for excellence in construction of an asphalt pavement. The company received its award at a special ceremony at the Association’s 49th Annual Convention in Phoenix, Arizona.
The Quality in Construction Award recognizes outstanding performance in the construction in roadway or airport runway construction. Award criteria include the quality of the construction material used on the project and assessments of workmanship quality for the final construction work. “NAPA selects the recipients of its paving awards using a known set of standards that have been shown to give a good result,” commented Peter A. Wilson, Chairman of the NAPA Board of Directors. “This award demonstrates the high quality of work.”
Graniterock’s Pavex Construction Division won the award for its outstanding work on San Francisco International Airport Runway 1R-19L Overlay Project. The unique and challenging project consisted of a 21-day timeline with work schedules running 24 hours a day. Approximately 80,000 tons of asphaltic concrete was produced by the Graniterock plants in Redwood City and South San Francisco and expertly placed by Graniterock’s Pavex Construction Division. Just delivering the 80,000 tons of asphalt in less than 21-days required 3,333 truckloads of hot mix asphalt (blacktop) to exacting FAA and San Francisco International Airport specifications. In addition to the operational challenges, heightened safety and security regulations made the job particularly difficult to schedule. The paving operation was completed in less time than was available despite the very tight scheduled. Attention to paving-practice quality resulted in an added benefit of improved runway smoothness.
NAPA, founded in 1955, is the nation’s largest association of hot mix asphalt producers. NAPA supports an active research program designed to improve the quality of hot mix asphalt pavements and paving techniques used in the construction of roads, highways, parking lots, airports and environmental and recreational facilities.
Graniterock has been headquartered in Watsonville, California, since its founding in 1900. The Graniterock People work in branch locations in South San Francisco, Redwood City, San Jose, Salinas, Monterey, Oakland, Watsonville, Felton and Santa Cruz.
