Graniterock’s Use of Recycled Materials
Graniterock is a proponent of the use of recycled (reclaimed) materials in the production of its products as long as the quality of the products made with recycled materials are maintained or enhanced when compared to the same products that are made with virgin materials.
In some cases, environmental laws mandate the use of recycled materials and Graniterock must comply with those laws. When those situations occur, strict control and testing is used to ensure product quality.
The following is a list of the recycled materials Graniterock currently uses and in what products or how the materials are used:
FLY ASH
Graniterock uses fly ash in the production of PCC. Fly ash, when used properly, will enhance the quality of PCC (See article on Recycled PCC materials for more details).
RECYCLED (RECLAIMED) WATER
Graniterock will use reclaimed wash water and processed storm water in the production of PCC. Testing has shown that proper control of reclaimed water has no detrimental effects to the performance of PCC.
RECYCLED PCC AND AC RUBBLE
Graniterock operates construction rubble recycle facilities. These facilities crush and screen broken PCC and AC into Class 2 Aggregate Base, Class 4 Aggregate Base and Sub Base. Testing has shown that the use of recycled PCC and AC in Class 2 Aggregate Base can produce a product that is easier to compact than virgin material.
cGraniterock will use RAP in the production of Asphaltic Concrete (AC). Caltrans and other agencies often will allow up to 20% of new AC to be made with RAP. RAP is screened, tested and separated into its own stockpile. Testing has shown that the use of RAP has no detrimental effects to the performance of AC.
