WATSONVILLE - The Bruce W. Woolpert Algebra Academy is set to inspire the next generation of mathematicians July 29-Aug. 2.

This year's Academy introduces Joby Aviation as a new partner, joining long-time supporters Graniterock and Driscoll's. Joby is partnering with the nonprofit Monterey Bay Drone Automation and Robotics Technology (DART) in supporting the Academy.

"It is an honor to connect the Bruce Woolpert Algebra Academy legacy with the cutting-edge engineering teams at Joby to inspire young minds, increase awareness, and provide access to emerging career pathways," said Josh Metz, DART Executive Director. "Together with Joby, we're excited to highlight DART's cross-sector facilitation role and expanding workforce development program focus."

Local media are invited to visit this educational experience at Graniterock headquarters in Watsonville, Driscoll’s Cassin Ranch in Watsonville and Joby Aviation in Marina.

Now in its 15th year, the Academy will host 95 talented eighth-grade students from middle schools in Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey counties for an intensive 5-day algebra enrichment program.

Teens attending the Academy were chosen based on academic performance and recommendations from their middle school math teachers.

Participants will receive high-level instruction from university professors, enjoying a supportive 4:1 student-to-staff ratio that fosters deep learning and confidence-building. Instructors from UC Santa Cruz and Cal State Monterey Bay will guide students through advanced algebraic concepts, preparing them for future academic success.

In addition, professionals from Driscoll’s, Graniterock and Joby will share inspirational background stories and shed light on how they put math to practical use in the fields of agricultural science, engineering and construction, and aeronautics.

"At Driscoll's, we aim to strengthen the communities where we live and grow through unique community investments and partnerships like we see here with the Bruce W. Woolpert Algebra Academy,” said Angie Martinez, Driscoll’s Early Career and University Recruiter. “We're excited to continue to support the Academy's enrichment program as part of our efforts to create more opportunities for childhood youth and development. This program provides students with alternative learning experiences, and it's our hope that it will also inspire them to want to learn more about how math skills can be applied in the agricultural industry in their community."

A field trip to CSUMB is planned for Wednesday, July 31 to introduce students to the college campus and the work of CSUMB’s science and math departments.

The Academy, founded in 2010 by Graniterock's late president Bruce W. Woolpert, continues to honor his passion for mathematics education.

"The Bruce W. Woolpert Algebra Academy provides a unique opportunity for motivated students to deepen their understanding of mathematics in a supportive environment," said Christy Sessions, Executive Director of the Academy. "We're thrilled to welcome Joby Aviation as a new partner and to continue our mission of empowering young minds in STEM fields."

“Each year, I'm inspired by the enthusiasm and growth we see in these students as they dive into advanced algebra concepts,” said Rose Ann Woolpert, Graniterock family owner and Academy board member. “Bruce would be incredibly proud to see how his vision has flourished, positively impacting over 1,100 students to date and fostering a love for mathematics that will serve them throughout their academic and professional lives."

Media representatives are invited to observe classes, interview students and instructors and learn more about this program that has benefited over 1,100 alumni since its inception.
